Padraig Harrington Meets Golf Support!

Wilson Staff player and three-time Major winner Padraig Harrington spent the day with Golf Support professionals Shaun Brain and Andrew Malpas at European Tour destination The London Club in Kent recently.

After narrowly missing out on count back both Golf Support Professionals were disappointed not to play a skins match with Padraig, but quick thinking on behalf of Andy Malpas saw him become Padraig caddy for the round allowing him to get some real insight into how the major winner really plays his game.

Andy says “It was very interesting to watch and speak to Padraig as he is a very down to earth man, very polite and approachable. He was very talkative when giving tips and instructions to me and I found his whole story inspiring and admirable. He offered lots of advice about all aspects of my game including swing tips and mental attitude which I will defiantly find useful in the future”.

As Padraig is a Wilson Staff Player he played with the FG Tour Irons with Rifle shafts carried in the Wilson Staff Tour Golf Bag in red and white. He wore the Footjoy Synr-G golf shoes and as a Titleist Staff Player used Titleist Golf Balls.

For 12 years between 1994 and 2006 john was a dedicated full time Golf coach solely working on game improvement to all levels using the most up to date state of the art coaching methods and equipment. Whilst many golf lessons were to the masses John’s expertise brought many low amateurs and a mass of local Professionals to pick his brains and learn from his knowledge.

Initially I was reluctant to offer golf lessons on a simulator having never used one before and was concerned that it may not be possible to maintain the high standards that I have built my reputation on. After using the simulator and understanding it I can say that I have seen a tremendous benefit to both my own game and a much faster understanding of the swing from my pupils. The reason for this is quite simple – after each shot the computer records the clubface throughout the swing and shows graphical evidence of what the student has just done, making it much easier to explain the changes required.

Frequently asked questions about golf tuition/coaching

When is the best time to take a golf lesson?
Whilst I would say golf lessons can be taken any time throughout the season, the best time to make changes would be outside of the Golfing season so autumn/winter when you golf is not so important. One thing is for sure with a golf lesson, be prepared to go 1 step backwards before you take the 2 steps forward. A good Professional will of course explain WHY you are going backwards and give a clear explanation of how this change will improve your game.

How many Golf lessons do I need?
Just take a look at the Professionals on tour who have their coaches with them day in day out. These guys are not learning something new all the time but are fine tuning what they already know, which takes me to my Jigsaw analogy. Consider your golf swing like a jigsaw, there are many pieces to it and from time to time a piece may fall out. It is our job as professionals to put these pieces back in place for you as quickly and painlessly as possible. The beauty of a consistent relationship with your coach means that he or she knows your jigsaw pieces inside out and can quickly put that particular piece back in place without re building the entire jigsaw.

How often should I come for a golf lesson?
Many Coaches will keep you coming week after week, not us! This has just one benefit and it is not to you, but the Professionals back pocket. You should discuss with your professional time scales and your intended practice schedule between lessons. It is this amount of practice that determines time scales between lessons. Consider your golf swing like a Jigsaw puzzle – You come for a lesson and learn a piece of the jigsaw, there may be many pieces to adjust or learn– You then go away and work at that piece so that it is second nature and ingrained. If your lessons are too frequent and you have not mastered the first piece of the jigsaw, by giving more pieces all together simply makes it too complicated and you will not see the full picture (end result-better shots)

This weekend is the last in the golfing calendars PGA Events and so far there is no clear favorite out to win. Tiger' Woods is not playing like he should, Phil Mickelson is not in top form either and Lee Westwood is not even playing. Those are the world's top-ranked players ... and those are the reasons why the expectations of a breakthrough major winner are so high going into Thursday's opening round at Whistling Straits.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who captured his first PGA TOUR win earlier this year at the Wells Fargo Championship is aiming high along with England's Paul Casey also pushing for a top finish. The ALF trousers are made from GORE-TEX Performance Shell fabric with an elasticated waist. Gore-Tex Performance Shell is a laminated membrane for durable wind and water protection. The fabric is highly breathable which enables the release of excess heat and moisture. From the experience of the staff here at Golf Support the fabric of these trousers makes them hard wearing and easy to wash and maintain.

With these trousers Galvin Green offer the guarantee that they will keep you dry! That’s a bold statement but tried and tested by our staff and we can confirm so far so good.

When it rains on the golf course, there is no substitute for a good set of waterproofs and there is no substitute for Galvin Green waterproof clothing – simply the best!

The AUGUST trousers are also made from Gore-Tex but Paclite Shell fabric instead of Performance Shell. The laminated Gore-Tex Paclite membrane is very durable for wind and water protection but the fabric is ultra light and ultra packable, making them extremely hard wearing and very easy to wash and maintain.

The fabric is also highly breathable material which enables the release of excess heat and moisture and Galvin Green guarantee to keep you dry. These also have an elasticated waist.

The main difference in these two pairs of trousers is the Ultra-light Paclite fabric of the August trousers which is barely half the weight of conventional Gore-Tex rainwear, the unique abrasion-resistant lamination of Paclite fabric eliminates the need for any additional lining making these the perfect rainwear for the golfer who prefers to carry his bag. Despite its light weight, no compromise has been made and both the ALF and AUGUST trousers are fantastic rainwear.

The Ardell is a new half zip jacket in stretch GORE-TEX® Performance Shell fabric. This laminated GORE-TEX® membrane is designed to be extremely durable against wind and offer water protection. The fabric is highly breathable that enables the release of excess heat and moisture. But it’s also hard wearing and easy to wash and maintain, meaning it can be stuffed in and out of your golf bag as often as you like and it should still remain in great condition!

It’s available in 3 colours, brilliant blue/black, gunmetal/white and chili red/black in size small to 3 XL.

This is very similar to previous designs from Galvin Green, but if it aint broken – why fix it?

Team Galvin Green Tour players came to the fore this Spring.

Peter Hanson moved a step closer to the world’s top 50 and a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team with an impressive win at the Majorca Open in May. He overcame a one-shot penalty for a double hit when chipping from the edge of the 12th green during the final round to reach a play-off after being two behind with four to play.

The Swede then won his third European Tour title on the first extra hole and said: “It feels absolutely fantastic after all that happened there.”

Earlier, Welshman Jamie Donaldson was in contention at the Volvo China Open in April - at one point sharing the lead with eventual winner and US PGA champion Y.E. Yang.

The MX-700 swept the boards in 2009 winning Today's Golfers wood grand slam - with separate gold’s in the Driver, fairway and hybrid categories.

Just to confirm what a great club the MX-700 is, the Driver won TG's gold award again in the 2010 awards - taking top marks for distance and dispersion.

Andy Kikidas, Product Manager received the award on behalf of Mizuno, "The MX-700 is going very strong into its second year. Normally a wood is out performed by newer technology after a year - which just shows what a rare piece of technology we have in the MX-700."

The Custom Fitting Process

Step 1

If you are already a golfer and have your own golf equipment then we will need to record your Iron, Driver or club you are looking to upgrade first. This will give us a base point to begin with. Once this data is recorded our Club fitter will explain to you the readings on the screen. (See below)

Step 2

Our Club fitter will then Measure you for 3 key characteristics of a golf club, Length, Lie angle and grip size.
1.Incorrect shaft length can lead to poor posture which in turn lead’s to poor positions in your golf swing.
2.Grip size- when choosing a grip it is important that you have a grip that is the correct size. If the grip is too small for your hands then you will naturally squeeze the grip tighter. This will cause tension in the forearms, upper arms and shoulders. If the grip is to big you will not be able to apply the correct amount of pressure to be able to control the club head and it will be very difficult to rotate the club head in to the correct position through impact. A grip too thin can result in over hooking and a grip too fat can result in slicing.
3.Lie angle- at the point of impact the club head will make contact with the ground. It is important that the club head hits directly in the centre. If it strikes the toe or the heel of the club then the club head position will alter. This can lead to shots being offline. Tests have shown that if the lie is only one degree out the ball can be offline by up to 10 yards.

Step 3

Once we have determined the correct measurements of your golf club we can move into the more technical aspect of matching a shaft and head type that will improve your game. There are many aspects to consider and our fitter will by now have already identified a guideline of required shaft flexes from your initial data. This is where his expertise will shine and by matching a different head with a different shaft you will see for yourself the exact improvements on the screen before you.

The data on the screen is measuring required information to determine the correct club for the individual. This data includes:

Club head speed
Ball speed
Launch angle
Angle of descent
Clubface angle/side spin
Swing path

Once all of the factors are considered by the machine it will give you a “shot score”. This is the average of all the above data and will determine an overall best club for you.

You will now have tried several different shafts and heads and the averages will be on the screen before you.

You can now make a fully informed and accurate decision about which golf club is tailor made to your golf swing.

Kids Golf Clothing with Galvin Green & Golf Support

As a parent of a child golfer I know it is sometimes difficult to find practical yet fashionable clothing for my son to wear whilst playing his favorite hobby.

Luckily Galvin Green’s New Spring/Summer Collection has a range of kids clothing including waterproofs and windstoppers at very reasonable prices which satisfy his need to look good and mine to be practical.

My favorite items are the REX Insula Jacket. It has excellent thermal insulation properties exactly the same as the adult inslua jackets and an extremely high level of breathability with the ability to transport moisture away from the body. It makes a good intermediate layer on cold days or a nice outer on a warmer day.

This jacket is light, extremely comfortable and very soft to the touch. Luckily for me it’s also easy to wash and keeps its shape!

Perfect in combination with other Galvin Green garments in the multi-layer range and is Unisex so both girls and boys would feel comfortable wearing it.

The RIVER Waterproof trousers are a great source of protection from the wind and rain. The have exactly the same technology as the Men’s Waterproofs with a laminated GORE-TEX Paclite membrane.

The highly breathable material enables the release of excess heat and moisture and there are really light and packable. Perfect for being stuffed in and out of my sons golf bag!

They need to be extremely hard wearing and easy to wash and maintain which Galvin Green assure they are offering the same guarantee to keep you dry as with there whole collection of waterproofs.

The REMY Short sleeve T Shirt in red or blue is a nice little top made of 65% polyester and 35% cotton. Great for sunny days or under a jumper or Insula.

It has the same benefits as the rest of the Galvin Green range being having an extremely high level of breathability that enables moisture to be transported away from the body. It also has stretch options for maximum freedom of movement and swing so even though it is a top layer jacket it should not mean a restriction in swing. It’s Very durable and easy to wash and maintain.

Ball Fitting “What an Experience”

Here at Golf Support we love to hear customer feeback, here a customer has recently used our Golf Ball Fitting Service and would like to share his thoughts:

I had been coerced into having a ball fitting by one of my golfing buddies “Book a fitting it’s unbelievable, only £10 “he was constantly saying. Eventually I gave in Phoned Richard at Golfsupport and booked my appointment for yesterday morning.

On arrival I handed over my £10 and entered the state of the art simulator with a screen as big as the side of a house. Even with all this technology I found myself still very much sceptical as to how much difference a ball could make to my game, and also pretty sure that having played off a handicap of 4 I already had the ideal ball in my bag (TaylorMade TP Red).

Richard arrived introduced himself, asked various questions about my game, ball flight etc and advised me to warm up hitting a few balls in the simulator. Once loosened up Richard explained that a Vector launch monitor would be used in conjunction with the simulator to analyse ball flight, spin, launch angle, carry, total distance and many more criteria way beyond my comprehension in order to find my perfect ball.

We started with my ball of choice a TP red hit 5 shots and then reviewed the results, reasonable carry, acceptable total distance and straight all five landing around the middle of the fairway, I was sure at this point that I was going to be only the second player ever that Richard had fitted and had ended up with the ball they started with!

On we went through half a dozen other balls and amazingly with each change Richard made either a little more carry, increased back spin or better launch angel seemed to be gained with each new ball (the sceptic in me was sure these increases were due to me getting more into the groove rather than the change of ball) after 45 minutes Richard arrived at a conclusion, the ideal ball for me was the Bridgestone RX giving me an additional 9 yards of carry and in total going an extra 21 yards off the tee.

“Before we finish Richard I would like to hit a couple of shots with the TP red” in my own mind I had to know whether the sceptic in me was right, 3 shots later I was at the counter buying a dozen Bridgestone RX golf balls!

I can’t believe that changing to the correct ball has added over 20 yards to my tee shots, which in turn will mean I will be playing 1 to 2 irons less for my approach shots into greens.

I write this in the hope that others can learn not to be as sceptical as I was about a new way of improving your golf for less than the cost of a sleeve of balls, add to this the offer that if you don’t see improvement they will give you your money back then what are you waiting for ?
